Who are we?

AGAINST HUNGER

Why are we unique?

We are experts in nutrition. We have an experienced technical team that has been at the forefront of major progress in the fight against malnutrition over the past 40 years. Our research is endorsed by a prestigious international scientific committee.

We are part of an active international network in more than 50 countries on five continents.

We work with an integrated approach that combines actions in all our technical fields for fighting both the causes and consequences of hunger: nutrition, health, agriculture and livelihoods, disaster risk management, water, sanitation, hygiene, etc.

We have an Emergency Team that is ready to be mobilised and sent to anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours.

We intervene in both emergencies and development. We continue to support people after a crisis.

We work with Governments and local partners to make our work part of their policies and institutions, thus expanding the scope of our projects and making them sustainable.

We have transparency mechanisms that allow us to track every euro invested in our organisation.

WHY ARE WE HUMANITARIAN?

We work to alleviate the suffering of people threatened by hunger, whoever they are, wherever they are, whatever the cost, in the short, medium and long term. No matter where we undertake our work, we respect the following principles:

INDEPENDENCE

Our actions are not defined in terms of domestic or foreign policies, nor does the organisation act in the interest of any government. We act according to our own principles in order to maintain our moral and financial independence.

NEUTRALITY

We maintain a strict political and religious neutrality. However, we will always denounce human rights violations as well as obstacles put in the way of our humanitarian activities.

TRANSPARENCY

At Action Against Hunger, we are completely transparent in our actions. We provide our beneficiaries, donors and partners with clear information regarding the allocation and use of our funds, providing a guarantee of good management.

FREE AND DIRECT ACCESS TO PEOPLE IN NEED

We demand free access to populations in need and direct control of our programmes. We will denounce and act against all obstacles that prevent us from doing so. We also verify the allocation of our resources to ensure they reach the right people. Under no circumstance can the organisations we partner with become the ultimate beneficiaries of our programmes.

NON-DISCRIMINATION

We reject any discrimination based on sex, race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, ideology or social class.

PROFESSIONALISM

We are committed to working to the highest professional standards in all aspects of our programmes, from design to execution, from management to evaluation. We build on years of experience and aim for constant improvement.

WE WORK FOR

NUTRITION AND HEALTH

We work towards the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of malnutrition, concentrating on the most likely victims: children under five. We work with pregnant women and parents on family healthcare. This is done via nutritional recovery programmes, nutritional surveys, epidemiological monitoring, promotion of breastfeeding, a varied diet, basic healthcare, nutritional supplement programmes and nutritional recovery in disasters and traumatic situations.

FOOD SECURITY AND LIVELIHOODS

We support agriculture, livestock, fishing and other activities that aim to produce more food sustainably or generate the money needed to acquire said food.

The goal is to ensure sufficient food for families at all times. Our interventions include distributing seeds and tools, training in agricultural techniques and implementing income-generating activities.

WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE

We facilitate access to safe water and basic sanitation to prevent the development of malnutrition-related diseases. We build wells, water networks, latrines and sanitation infrastructure; we promote basic hygiene techniques; and we provide the tools to guarantee hygienic conditions.

EMPLOYABILITY AND INCLUSIVE EMPLOYMENT

We provide people at risk of exclusion with support in accessing job opportunities and undertaking entrepreneurial activities. We do this by developing self-knowledge and self-esteem and by training people in key skills such as communication and teamwork.

RESILIENCE AND DISASTER RISK PREVENTION

We promote people's ability to absorb, adapt and transform in the face of crises in order to reduce their exposure to disasters, whether natural or man-made. To do this, we develop early warning systems and risk management and contingency and development plans, with local budgets that include a risk management element. We also support the construction of earthquake- or flood-adapted infrastructure and promote agricultural production techniques adapted to drought.

WE WORK AGAINST THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF HUNGER

CONFLICTS

Conflicts lead to the mass displacement of people who are left without water and food and therefore abandon their lands and livelihoods.

Natural disasters

Natural disasters have a greater effect on the countries most threatened by hunger because they are more exposed to climate change and less prepared to face them. Ninety-five per cent of the victims of natural disasters live in developing countries.

Poverty

Ninety-eight per cent of those suffering from hunger are poor and live in developing countries. Poverty and hunger constitute a vicious circle, with malnourished children having less ability to work on behalf of their countries in the future.

Social exclusion

The inability to get a decent job or start businesses of their own puts the most vulnerable population groups at risk, thus hindering their livelihoods.
